Statement from John F. Kennedy Jr., May 20, 1994, on passing of his mother, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, date of death May 19, 1994, outside her New York City apartment, address of 1040 Fifth Avenue, where she died

“Last night at around 10:15, uh, my mother passed on, she was surrounded by her friends and her family and her books, uh, and the people and the things that she loved, and she did it in her own way, and in her own terms, and uh, and we all feel lucky for that, and now she’s in God’s hands. Uh, there’s been an enormous outpouring of good wishes, uh, from everyone both in New York and beyond, and, uh, I speak for all of our family when we say we’re extremely grateful, everyone’s been very generous. And uh, I hope now that uh, you know, we just have these next couple days in relative peace, and uh, thank you all very much.”

(A private funeral service was held May 21, 1994, at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church at Park Avenue and 84th Street in New York City. Burial was May 23, 1994, at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.)
